What's With the Dangling Mouthguards?

I’ve noticed in professional and college football that the players, especially in the skilled positions, do not actually wear their mouthguard.

Most of them will have their mouthguard hanging from their helmets but not placed in their mouths. I find this weird.

Some players will even have two mouthguards hanging from their helmets and neither of them in the players' mouth. That is even weirder.

My question is this: Why have a mouthguard hanging from your helmet and you're not even wearing it? It seems like the mouthguard would be a distraction, flopping all over the place while they run during a play.

When I ask my friends if they’ve ever noticed this phenomenon, they will say, “What are you talking about? I’ve never noticed that.”

I’m thinking that these guys are going to break their teeth during a hard collision but what I realized is that most people don’t think like thatbecause they are not dentists.

We all focus on the stuff that’s important to us. This is why when most people notice something in their smile that they don’t like, they can’t get it out of their mind once they notice it.

This happens to us all the time. We go to a wedding, take pictures, and they are sent out for people to share. Then all of sudden, you notice, in the photo, that your front tooth looks chipped and discolored.

Then you begin to notice it in the mirror while you’re getting ready for the day. Now you begin noticing other chips on your teeth. Then every time you see your reflection, on every object, you notice your teeth.

You become fixated on the changes in your smile that you now consider a problem. And you start wondering if and when you should get it fixed.
