Spring Clean Up

Every year, included in our trash pickup, we get a day that the city of LaGrange allows us to throw anything away and our trash pickup will come by and get it.

We usually miss this day and don’t do a good job getting rid of any of our junk that we’ve accumulated over the years.

This year, my wife, Sarah was on a mission. She wanted to clean out any unused stuff from our house. She looked up on our village website for which day spring clean-up would be. And she came up with a plan.

She cleaned out her closet to get rid of any clothes, shoes, jewelry and accessories. She also went through all of Finn’s toys and sports equipment.

For the last few weeks, leading up to the big day, Sarah had been going around to different second hand stores, selling off her stuff as well.

I was shocked with the amount of money she was able to get back from all that stuff.

Then came the Big Day and Sarah was on a mission. She took me to the basement and began pointing at piles that she wanted taken out to the curb. Our curb was definitely the one with the most junk.

People with their own trucks would drive by, and our pile kept getting smaller and smaller. People would go through our pile and were able to find items of value. By the end of the day our pile had become almost nonexistent.

After this major purge, our house feels less cluttered and more comfortable. I felt a sense of accomplishment. I was avoiding getting all that stuff cleaned out. It seemed overwhelming and I didn’t know where to start.

Having neglected the years of Spring-Cleaning Trash Pick Up had caused us to accumulate a lot of stuff that we were not using.

I felt that it was going to be a lot of work, tough to do and overwhelming. Once we were done, we were happy we did it.

In dentistry, we have these same types of obstacles.

Most people, at some point in their life, will have an interruption in their dental care. For some of us, it may be a move to another city or another part of town. Or we may have an interruption in our job or dental insurance coverage.

Life changes will, many times, derail our health care rhythm. The hardest part is making that initial call to set up the appointment.

We tend to get scared that the long dental gap may have created a long list of dental issues that we are apprehensive to face.

We begin to think: Are they going to find a lot of dental issues? Is it going to hurt? Is it going to be expensive?

All of these thoughts become barriers and obstacles that keep us from calling and making appointments.

But once patients do come in, they feel very happy that they did.
