We bought our home over 11 years ago. Our home is nice, but we have discussed the desire to have some more space for a while. We’ve looked on the real estate market and have yet to find anything we love that is in our budget.
So, Sarah suggested making an addition on our home. Then we both began imagining how this new and improved home would look like.
Sarah began by describing how she wanted a sunroom, lots of natural light, and an area to host our friends and family.
She began describing areas without any type of detail. It was very general, but she described the emotions she wanted to feel.

She would describe it like this, “I want a room where we can entertain people. I want a space where we can have a big group and have everyone feeling comfortable in the space. Not cramped.”
What she’s really saying is “I don’t want to feel embarrassed when my family comes over because there’s not enough room to sit.”
If we go down this home remodel route, what will happen is, we will talk to an architect, and he will need to translate those non-descript emotional words into a drawing of a space.
I actually understand where she’s coming from. This is exactly what happens when someone talks about redoing their smile.
Our patients will describe an embarrassing situation with their grandkid. It will go something like this, “I was taking care of my granddaughter the other day, and she told me that my teeth were all different colors. I was so embarrassed, and I want to improve my smile.”
Then I’ll ask them, “What were you thinking?” Then they will say, “I don’t know, maybe whiter and straighter.”
Then I’ll begin to show them different photos. Do you like that? How about this smile? What do you like about these teeth? Then I begin to get an idea of what they like.

After that, based on the description they give us, we will make them a plastic prototype of the teeth “we think” they want. Then this prototype is inserted onto their existing teeth so they can see how it will change their smile.
Doing this allows people to imagine what their future smile can be and any changes they want are made during this phase.
Everyone has things they want to improve but seeking experts to help guide them will usually give the best results.
