My Old Friend, Frank (Continued)

Last week, I wrote about my friend Frank, and I was supposed to finish the story the next day. But, oops, life happens and I was delayed.

As I stated, Frank Munoz played a big role in my dental career. He was my first boss and my friend. He had a very magnetic personality and was a great guy.

If Frank said he was going to do something, he always kept his promise. I never had a contract with Frank. We just had a conversation and a handshake. I was never concerned that he wouldn’t honor his promises. He wasn’t that type of guy.

He too, started his dental practice from scratch and it grew quickly. He was really talented and had integrity.

Frank would treat you like family. Any dental recommendation he gave to a patient was as if he would have presented it to his own mother or wife. He believed in what he did.

His philosophy was, “What would I do if this person was my own mother or my family member?”

Most family-owned dental businesses have this very same thought process when running a business.

For many of the patients, they’ve known since the patients were little kids. Then you knew their parents before they were married with kids. They essentially are like family.

This is the major difference between a corporate owned office and a family-owned office.

It’s the relationship you have with your patients. It’s at a deeper level. It’s less transactional and more relationship based.

It’s what I strived to establish when I opened my office almost 20 years ago. And I can say, with huge pride, we achieved just that.

Many of our patients have been with us the entire time that Dente has been open (since 2006.)

We have the goal of treating our patients for a lifetime. We want our patients to grow with us.

A relationship centered dental office is becoming extinct and I think it’s sad to see that.

In the corporate dental practices, you may see a different doctor every time you come. Your face is just a transaction number. And some people are ok with that. And that’s fine.
