Learning Strategies

This last weekend, I was in Washington DC at a dental conference. I love attending conferences instead of doing online conferences.

During the pandemic, all of the conferences went online and avoided any in person events for a couple of years. Many people consumed their classes online and when the conferences went back to being an in-person event, they never came back.

I am not one of those people. I love in-person learning. I learn better in an in-person environment and always meet new people.

Even though I’ve been practicing for over 20 years, I still come out of those meetings with about 5 to 10 new things that I learned.

The most important part of these classes isn’t the learning of the material, it’s the implementation of the material.

If you learn something and don’t implement it… what’s the point.

So I have a system… Whenever I’m in class and I hear an "a-ha!" moment, I will write it down, then place a star next to it and circle it. That lets me know that this is something that I want to implement in the office.

Before I get home from the class, I’ll write an action plan of the steps that I need to take to get there. Then the most important part, I’ll find someone who’s already done it, to guide me through the process. Someone with experience to help me get to my end goal faster.

In dentistry, we do this all the time.

A patient will go to the dentist with a certain goal for their mouth. The dentist comes up with a strategy of how to get there. Then their whole team will come up with a way to implement the treatment and discuss the patient options with them.

The key for this to work properly is that you need to find a dentist with experience that has done this hundreds of times. Also you need to be in an office where the provider/dentist is consistently there. The worst thing that could happen is that every year you are assigned a new dentist at the office.

Our office fills all those requirements.

Our dental office has been open for almost 20 years. I’ve been the only dentist who has practiced at that office. Every single procedure has been done by me…no one else.

Most of our staff have been here for over 5 years and some have been there for over 10 years.

Dentistry today is going through a transformation. Dentistry is becoming more corporate. That means that each time you go into the office, you may see a different provider. If you’re ok with that…cool. No sweat, keep going.

But if you’re looking for consistent quality care, someone who knows you and your needs then we’re the answer.

If you are looking for an experienced dentist that will treat you every step of the way, please visit us at mydente.com or call 773-292-1911 to schedule your appointment.
